Amounts will change slightly from year to year, but as the cost of college increases, the scholarship packages will correspondingly increase. Policy Regarding Outside Funding
The first $500 of outside funding will not affect grants from Macalester. Macalester grants will be reduced by fifty percent of the amount of outside funding exceeding $500. Federal Work-Study may be reduced to comply with Federal Student Aid rules requirements. Total grants and outside funding may not exceed the cost of attendance.

Policy on Health Insurance
Macalester requires all students to have health insurance. If the student is not covered by his or her own health insurance plan, Macalester will provide a grant to pay for the Macalester College health insurance plan.

Policy on Travel Allowance
Students are expected to pay for travel to and from campus as part of their contribution from summer work and/or academic year earnings.

Requirements Associated with Maintaining this Award
Students must reapply each year for financial aid in order to maintain the match scholarship award.

Other Details
The grants provided will include a Campus Residence Grant which cannot be used when a student resides off campus (typically during junior and/or senior year). The 2021-2022 Campus Residence Grant is $1,236.

Need-based student loans are available if students wish to borrow to replace the summer work and/or the Campus Employment expectations.

Students pay personal expenses, books, and travel expenses from summer and/or academic year earnings. The work-study amount increases from year to year. The 2021-2022 amounts are:

  • First year: $3,100

  • Second year: $3,400

  • Third year: $2,950

  • Fourth year: $3,050

Macalester also offers an optional textbook advance program. The textbook advance program enables students to obtain textbooks at the beginning of the semester and utilize earnings from student employment to repay the advance by the end of the semester.
